Gupta worked with an NGO. She lived at Maruti Towers in Thakur Complex with her brother and his wife. Earlier this month, her brother and his wife left for Lucknow. Gupta was staying alone in the apartment in the absence.
"A few days earlier, Gupta's brother called her up to check on her. But she wouldn't answer his calls. Worried, he dialled a cousin who stayed at Dahisar. The cousin and her husband went to Gupta's apartment on Saturday evening to check if she was safe. They knocked on the door repeatedly but Gupta did not answer it," said senior inspector Ravindra Patil.
Gupta's cousin gathered that the flat was locked from inside. The police was informed and the door was broken open. Gupta's body was found in the passage near the bathroom around 4 pm. The body had begun to decompose and was sent for an autopsy to the Borivali post-mortem centre. No note or belongings were found nearby. Gupta's had placed her clothes in the bathroom, prompting cops to suspect that she may have slipped after a bath.
"Forensic experts said Gupta had sustained fractures to her neck and legs. The exact cause of death isn't clear yet. The viscera has been sent to the state forensic science laboratory at Kalina for a chemical analysis," added Patil. "So far, we do not suspect foul play as the apartment was locked from inside but a probe is still on."
