MUMBAI: Fifteen days before the advent of Ramzan, it is said that Allah Almighty opens the annual Book of Deeds for each Muslim. It is this day, Lailat-ul' Baraat, which determines one's income as well as important life events like marriage, birth and death during the course of the year.

This year the auspicious occasion, also called Shab-E-Baraat or Badi Raat, occurs on Friday, June 13. According to the Islamic calendar the festival falls on the 15th day of the month of Shaban.

Through the intervening night of Friday-Saturday, lakhs of Muslims will visit mosques attached to cemeteries to pray for the souls of their dear departed. Some choose to sprinkle water, offer flowers and 'chadar' upon the graves as they recite blessings.

The occasion also serves to remind the faithful of their own mortality. Several people observe 'roza' on either or both days.

Shab-E-Baraat is the night when Allah Almighty opens the annual book of deeds for every individual. It is then that He ordains which human beings will be born or shall die during the course of the year, the kind of income each person will earn and throws open the doors of mercy and forgiveness,'' said a scholar at Juma Masjid.

He compared it to the 'shraddh' ceremony in Hinduism. Like 'upvas', the reason people fast this day is that this ritual purifies the soul and increases the power of prayer,'' the Imam said.

Muslim cemeteries across the city have been spruced up with a new coat of paint. Over in Versova, the Kokni Sunni Jamaat Trust has renovated its exteriors by building a grand archway and granite wall in time for Badi Raat.

Caretaker Rizwan Dadshe said, "We are expecting around 8,000 people to arrive through the night. A series of special Shab-E-Baraat namaz will be held after maghrib or evening prayer, from 7.00-10.00pm. This will be followed by Qurankhani.''

Around 6,000 'rozedars' among the visitors usually partake of the morning 'suhoor' or pre-dawn meal that is served in the adjacent dargah.
