MMOPL spokesperson said, "Commuters will be able to enjoy metro rides for mere Rs 5 between any two stations from 5.30am to 8am."
This is an offer which MMOPL will introduce on a trial basis for a week. This first-of-its-kind initiative is aimed at encouraging people to travel during off-peak hours.
He said, "This initiative would be a boon for the non-peak hour commuters. Those who would be buying tokens between 5.30am and 8am, will be able to travel by metro at a flat rate of Rs 5. Similarly, smartcard users also would get this benefit. Only Rs 5 would be deducted from the stored value in their cards if they exit the metro between 5.30am and 8am."
However, to avail this special discount, a commuter will have to use his token within the next half-an-hour of its purchase or else the token will expire, the spokesperson added. The step, officials said, would attract more people to commute by Metro.
This is the first time any Metro operator in India has introduced 'time of the day' tariff in an Automated Fare Collection System. The special off-peak-hour discount would be applicable only on week days.
Many metro services around the world, including London Tube, offer discounts during non-peak hours.
