MMRTA proposes Rs 2 hike for auto, taxi but waits for high court approval

MUMBAI: The MMRTA in its meeting on Friday proposed a fare hike of Rs 2 for autorickshaws and taxis in Mumbai. The government will now present their calculations before the Bombay high court and wait for an approval before announcing the hikes for commuters.

A senior government official said, "We will put our proposal before the court. If the court gives a go-ahead, only then we will implement it."

At present, the minimum fare for autos is Rs 15 and the fare is Rs 9.87 for every subsequent kilometre. Similarly, the minimum fare for taxi is Rs 19 and it is Rs 12.35 for every kilometre.

Commuter rights activists, led by Mumbai Grahak Panchayat, are not happy. They had challenged the last fare hikes of October 2012 in court.

"Any fare hike now can be termed as contempt of court as the matter is subjudice,'' said Shirish Deshpande of MGP. He is likely to challenge the hike in court.
