The incident took place on Monday when Prokash Hajra entered the victim's house to charge his mobile and spotted a bag belonging to the girl's father lying nearby. He tried to steal Rs 20 from it but the victim, Beauty Sarkar (7), who was alone at home, caught him red-handed.
"The girl's elder brother, Sagar (10), was playing outside when Hajra tried to steal money to buy alcohol. The Sarkars used to treat Hajra as family as both are West Bengal natives. On being caught by the girl, the accused caught the girl and held her head underwater in a tank, killing her. He then locked the house from outside and fled," said assistant commissioner (Deonar division) A P Jadhav. At 2.30pm when Beauty's mother Sonali (25), a housemaid, returned from work, she saw that the house was locked. "I saw Beauty lying unconscious. She was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead," Sonali said .
Hajra was held after Sagar told the police that he had seen him enter the house. Hajra then broke down and confessed to the crime. The police are awaiting the post-mortem report to know if the victim had been assaulted sexually.
