Maharashtra govt to seek Centre’s help to acquire Bhabha house

MUMBAI: The state government will ask the Centre to intervene and declare Dr Homi Bhabha's Malabar residence as a heritage structure, said CM Prithviraj Chavan. In a statement in the legislative council on Saturday, Chavan said he will write to PM Narendra Modi, who heads the atomic energy department, to acquire the property and convert it into a museum dedicated to nuclear science.

"The current owner wants to auction the property. We shall appeal to the Centre to declare it as a heritage structure. If the state government can do it, then we shall declare it a heritage structure or the Centre should do it. The bungalow is an expensive piece of property. The Centre should acquire it," he said.

The NCPA is the current owner of the bungalow, Mehrangir. In March, it issued a public notice inviting those interested in purchasing the bungalow.
