On Monday, Kazamali Rizvi (56) got promoted as the Deputy Block Development Officer (DyBDO) to Vikramgad taluka.
Hours later he was arrested by the Palghar police for conning six farmers. The farmers in their complaint stated that they paid a cheque of Rs 5 lakh each to Rizvi as deposit in December last year to install mobile towers of a service provider on their fields.
Rizvi promised them a monthly rent of Rs 45,000 for a period of 15 years. When the towers did not come up till last month, they approached Rizvi who repaid Rs 10 lakhs by way of cheque.
The cheque bounced. Rizvi has been arrested under section 420 IPC (cheating). He has been remanded to police custody till June 7. Police are ascertaining whether employees of the service provider are involved in the crime.
?Rizvi claimed that he had approached the farmers after reading an advertisement for plots to set up mobile towers in Palghar. He told the police that he had deposited the money into the account of the service provider who had gone back on their commitment to install the towers.
