MUMBAI: The Virar building where a couple and their minor son were killed following a leaked LPG explosion on Friday, has been declared dangerous by the municipality.
The explosion occurred in the second floor flat of Manish Housing Society in the wee hours of Friday, killing Shailesh Dhekne, his wife Pratibha and son Ladesh (9). While the police suspect that the leakage was caused by either of the couple who frequently fought, the explosion has affected the building.
The 33-year-old building has around 24 occupants. The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) officials inspected the building and found it dangerous. Residents are being issued notice to vacate the premises. Civic sources said that earlier, occupants had been asked to carry out a structural audit.
However, following the explosion, the structure has further weakened, making it dangerous for dwelling. The charred bodies were found the bedroom, which was completely destroyed in the fire that followed the explosion. The main room and kitchen of the flat were unaffected.
The spare LPG cylinder with a regulator switched on was lying near the bedroom raising suspicion that the leakage was done intentionally. The cylinder kept in the kitchen did not have a regulator. The residents are upset after learning about the structure weakening as they now have to look for alternative accommodation.
