According to the Virar police, Sandeep Yadav, a driver poured diesel on his wife Suman (27) at their Virar (east) home at around 3pm on Sunday. He then lit a matchstick and set her on fire. He watched as she called for help. Suman rushed out of the house and poured water from a drum lying outside. Her neighbour Usha Shelar, who watched Suman in flames, called the police. The children were playing at a distance when the incident took place.
Suman has been admitted to the Shatabdi hospital in Kandivli with around 90 per cent burns. Sandeep who was arrested hours after the crime told the police that he was upset with his wife who had failed to deliver a male child. In his statement, he said that he had begun to dislike his wife and wanted her out of his life.
Shelar told the police that Sandeep was alcoholic and the couple often fought. On Sunday too, the couple had an heated argument following which Sandeep even hit Suman. Sandeep used to take money from Suman for his drinks. Suman worked as a housemaid in the locality.
Police found the can in which the diesel was stocked. Police suspect that Sandeep may have planned to burn his wife and hence bought the diesel. As he was a driver, it was not difficult for him to get hold of the diesel, said the police. Sandeep has been remanded to police custody by the Vasai sessions court.
