number of hatchlings rescued by Youth Organization in Defence of Animals (YODA) at 49.
As fire fighters maneuvered their trucks and ladders to get closer to the trees-situated along a flight of steps-the birds squawked incessantly. As though protesting the fact that 20-odd nests are still dangling precariously. On Monday, after a hired contractor chopped the branches, many baby birds died and unhatched eggs were smashed.
Eventually, the fire fighters were forced to admit defeat. "The next option," said YODA co-founder, Pooja Sakpal, "is to get permission from the ward officer to hire people to climb the trees and move the nests to safety."
Since Monday, Sakpal has been caring for the 49 hatchlings, rescued from Nectar CHS, and three baby crows, from a Malad construction site, at her Mahim residence. On Wednesday, eleven of the smallest hatchlings, which require two-hourly feedings with a syringe, were moved to Thane SPCA. Mumbai's range forest officer, Anil Toradmal, has agreed to the rest being cared for in private foster homes. Knowing the birds will be well cared for has made "not sleeping for the last 72 hours worth it", said Sakpal.
An FIR has been filed against two residents, Amit Dhutia, and Sunny Butaney, under Sections 428 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) and 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) on Tuesday night. Before they take action, the police need to know whether the felling of the branches was authorized by the BMC.
We were unable to get in touch with Butaney despite visiting his home and calling, however, Dhutia, who is joint secretary of the housing society, claimed that he has been unfairly held responsible despite having nothing to do with the incident. "I am an animal lover," he said, "and I don't have any power to appoint a contractor to fell the trees."
He instead blamed the society's chairman and accountant, who insist they had nothing to do with the felling. "There have been complaints from residents about the branches in the past, and we said, 'Hold on, we will take the permissions, you can't just take the law into your own hands and hack branches," said society chairman Adil Khan, adding that most residents are "anguished" by the incident. He along with a few residents are chipping in to help with the expenses incurred by YODA.
