On Saturday, Mehta and Dr Homi Dhalla, who is part of the Doongerwadi committee on a voluntary basis, took journalists' to inspect the soil and "show how well plants are sprouting in it". Since the ground level has been raised around four feet, "we are banking it with stones as a precaution during the monsoon," said Dhalla adding that a lab report showed that the soil was of good quality and all actions were taken under the guidance of a botany expert. Parsiana editor, Jehangir Patel, was part of the contingent and agreed with Dhalla's assessment. "It is soil, not debris," he said. "Earlier, the ground was rocky. With this new soil, they are hoping for more vegetation."
But trustee Jimmy Mistry, argues that such a decision should not have been taken unilaterally by the BPP chairman. "The bottom line is this was done without board approval. Merely because the earth is getting washed off with the rains doesn't mean you dump trucks of earth. We have to plan on how to retain it and create a structural report before doing a project like this." The charity commissioner has been asked to look into the matter.
