Two of his sons Shaukat and Iqbal, who run Mehboob Studio in Bandra, donated Rs 10 lakh to a federation of cinema workers in his memory.
Mehboob Khan began his career as an actor in the silent film 'Alibaba Aur Chaalis Chor' in 1927. His talent soon got him bigger roles, and by 1931, he was earning a princely salary of Rs 60 per month playing villain for Sagar Movietone.
He directed his first film 'Judgement of Allah' in 1935. In 1942, Khan established his own film unit, and produced and directed 'Najma' . This was followed by 'Takdeer', 'Humayun', 'Anmol Ghadi', 'Elaan', 'Andaz' and 'Aan'.
'Mother India' was the 19th film in his film career spanning 30 years. This cult classic was nominated for an Academy Award. Khan started Mehboob Studio in Bandra in 1954. He died 10 years later at age 56.
Shaukat Sahab said, "My father passed away on May 28, 1964. On his 50th death anniversary we thought it fit to contribute some amount of money towards the welfare of industry workers. He had started his career as a humble worker. He rose from the ranks of extra to side actor, then became a contracted director for Sagar Movietone before going on to open his own film studio. Yet he never forgot his humble origins. For him, his workers were as important as his actors. He always had their welfare at heart because he knew what they were going through."
On May 28 the brothers Khan donated the sum to FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees), which is an umbrella organisation of 22 guilds run by make-up artistes, hair dressers, stuntmen, actors, writers and directors. "Our concern is that film workers in the state should continue to hold jobs. They should not suffer the plight of Mumbai's mill workers," Shaukat Sahab said. "However, we have not stipulated how FWICE should use the money. That is their prerogative."
