MUMBAI: Rahul Shewale of the Shiv Sena won the Mumbai South Central seat by a margin of a whopping 1.38 lakh votes, defeating sitting Congress MP Eknath Gaikwad who had hoped to score a hat-trick.

Shewale got 3.8 lakh votes while Gaikwad got 2.4 lakh. This would be the first Lok Sabha term for Rahul Shewale, who had occupied the most powerful position in the BMC as its standing committee chairman.

Shewle, 41, had contested on the development plank against Gaikwad, 74, who had earned the nickname of 'Giant Killer' after trouncing then Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi (Shiv Sena) in 2004.

Aditya Shirodkar of the MNS polled just 72,000 votes while AAP's Sundar Balakrishnan got 27,000 votes.
