MUMBAI: A 30-year-old man was arrested by the Kandivali police, along with his wife, for pushing his 10-year-old nephew into child labour and thrashing him. The accused had brought his nephew to Mumbai from his hometown in UP under the pretext of giving him a good education. But they would make him do chores and hit him when he failed. The boy has been rescued by the Kandivali police and sent to the children's shelter.

The accused have been identified as Walim Shaikh and his wife, Farida. Walim's nephew (name withheld) hailed from a financially weaker background. He had many siblings and his parents were finding it tough to make ends meet. Walim promised his sister that he would ensure his nephew became successful in life. But on bringing the boy to Mumbai, Walim and his wife forced the boy to do housework. Walim, who was engaged in the profession of setting imitation jewellery, also made his nephew assist him. If the boy did not do any of the work properly, he was beaten up.

"This was going on for three to four months. Recently, a neighbour noticed that the boy was covered with injuries and immediately informed us. On Thursday, we raided the couple's house on Kandivali Link Road and rescued the boy. The couple has been booked on charges of assault under sections 324 and 342 of IPC," said senior inspector Hareshwar Pimple, Kandivali police.
