Cops to escort municipal corporation personnel during drive against illegal hawkers

MUMBAI: Following the attack on a TV journalist by a group of hawkers after they misbehaved with his wife, Rakesh Maria, city police commissioner, has assured the BMC to provide maximum manpower to take action against the illegal hawkers in the city.

The commissioner indicated that a host of complaints about hawkers misbehaving with people, especially women, prompts the tough stand.

Maria in a letter to Sitaram Kunte, BMC commissioner, states that maximum police escort will be provided to the civic teams that will go on to take action against the illegal hawkers across the city.

Its note worthy that a group of hawkers had misbehaved with journalist, Sanjay Prasad's wife Malad a fortnight ago. When Prasad confronted the hawkers, they attacked him. Prasad sustained injuries. Three accused hawkers were caught while three others are still at large.

"Our men are busy in post election bandobast. Once the results are declared, we will provide police teams to civic officials when they go to take action against the illegal hawkers anywhere in the city," said Maria.

Sources in the BMC said that they will start a drive against the illegal hawkers, who are near railway stations first, and then the drive will spread in different parts of the city.
