MUMBAI: Commuters at CST railway station learnt that on Friday, May 30, was World No Tobacco Day when children from civic and government-aided schools performed a skit to discourage smoking and chewing tobacco. The little champions of the Salaam Bombay Foundation, an NGO named after the famous film by Mira Nair, demanded that the government introduce the 'Right to Tobacco Free Schools Bill' in Mumbai.
The foundation's Bal Parishad drafted this 'Bill' which they later submitted to the office of the municipal commissioner opposite CST. They demanded that the government ban the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of any school, and that smoking and chewing tobacco by faculty, staff and visitors be stopped inside the premises. The children want all schools to have a tobacco control committee chaired by the principal, and to integrate tobacco control activities with the ongoing School Health Programme of the state.
This activity was undertaken by children who are part of a 'Super Army' of this NGO. The foundation encourages them to discourage the use of tobacco using art, theatre and music. This programme involves 22 civic and government-aided schools across Mumbai. A 'survey' by the foundation claimed that the recommendations made in the WHO-Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC) for schools are not being implemented.
