Sumit Patankar, 26, was arrested after a 23-year-old girl student of a Koper Khairane engineering college, alleged that he had sexually assaulted her for the past three years, under the pretext of marrying her but later reneged on the promise.
The girl, who stays in a Vashi hostel, is the daughter of a cop at the Sangli police station. The girl has alleged that the professor's father who was against their marriage as she belonged to a lower caste, along with his family members had abused her and physically assaulted her some 2 months ago when she had gone to convince the professor's family members to accept their marriage proposal.
Acting on the girl's police complaint, the Vashi police, on Thursday had registered a FIR against the accused professor identified as Sumit Patankar (26), who has pursued M.Tech. He has been booked for rape, cheating, intentional insult and criminal intimidation under relevant IPC Sections 376, 420,417, 323, 504, 506 and 34. While the key accused professor's father Ratnakar Patankar (61) has also been arrested and booked under Prevention of Atrocity Act under Section 1,3 and 11.
Senior inspector Pathare said, "Our team had gone to Sangli to arrest them, but after knowing that the father-son duo have been arrested by the vashi police, the four accused have gone absconding. While, the arrested accused professor and his fatheWhile, the arrested accused professor and his father have been remanded in police custody till May 28."
