Following that, the exam time for the semester-1 paper —communication theory—was pushed from 11am to 3pm. Of the 80-odd students, 60 were asked to take the exam in affiliated colleges—Saraf College, K J Somaiya College and K C College. Close to 18 other examinees took the paper from the conference room of the university's health centre. "We received a phone call about our exam centre on Wednesday night.
A day before the exam, we had no clue about where we had to go to sit for our paper," said a candidate. Some students received messages on Whatsapp. Several other departments which used to ask colleges to play host as centres are now looking for space on the Kalina campus. "So many departments are short of staff and many don't even have their own lecture halls and work out stopgap arrangements. Also, most lecture halls in the university are not suitable for hosting exams as the benches are on the steps in the auditorium fashion," said a former head of a department.
New rules state that colleges have refused to conduct the smaller exams as they feel that it is difficult to depute staff members and set aside space for a handful of students. "While we do offer master's courses at our colleges, we find it difficult to reserve space and set aside staff for a handful of people who have signed up with the university," said a principal. The matter was raised with the academic council in November last year. In March, the university sent a circular to all departments asking them to conduct the exam with their own resources on the univ campus.
