Teachers give thumbs up to court verdict in arrears case

MUMBAI: Educators have welcomed the Bombay high court's order penalizing a trustee of a Malad school, its headmistress and an education inspector for denying a teacher her salary and dues for six years.

The verdict comes as a relief for thousands of teachers who have been fighting tooth and nail to get their dues.

"Our demands have been rebuffed repeatedly," said Anil Deshmukh, general secretary of the Maharashtra State Federation of Junior College Teachers' Organization.

This year, teachers initially boycotted assessment of HSC papers after which the government agreed to two of their five demands. The teachers have also complained about the "apathetic attitude" of government officials to their problems.

"We keep putting forth our problems to the officials and most of the times get no reply. Education inspectors sit on complaints from teachers for years but don't act on the same," said Rajesh Pandya, vice-president of the Teachers' Democratic Front.

College teachers said the verdict would deter the education department officials and institutes from dragging their feet on salary files.

The secretary of the Bombay University and College Teachers' Union (BUCTU), Madhu Paranjape, said denying salary dues is a violation of fundamental rights.
