At around 1 am on Sunday, Gurudev Rajpure (24) and Pradeep Shinde (25) were returning to their Indira Nagar home in Bhayander (east). On their way they met Vijay Singh, Shravan Khare, Akbar Badshah, all 20 years and Vikram Ghadge and Arjun Chavan, both 19. Singh, who was an accused in the murder of a local Republic Party of India (RPI) youth leader Dilip Ingle in December 2012, was out on bail since a year.
The two groups had a fight on holi and got into a fresh argument on Sunday. Vijay and his gang assaulted Rajpure and Shinde with iron rods. They sustained severe head injuries Gurudev and Shinde were taken to a local hospital. Gurudev died on Sunday morning while Shinde is serious. As news of the death spread, locals from Indira Nagar charged to the Navghar police.
On March 17, when the two groups had clashed the police had registered a non-cognisable offence against Vijay and had let him off. Locals said that had the police arrested him then, he would not have killed Gurudev. Shiv Sena MLA from Thane Pratap Sarnaik reached the police station as the crowd refused to move.
