MUMBAI: A 28-year-old man was arrested on Monday after he and his aides duplicated an ATM card and misused it for paying a restaurant bill. The accused, Shahnawaz Shaikh, was nabbed on Goregaon Link Road while his two aides managed to escape in an autorickshaw. The Bangur Nagar police are looking for them. All the three men are residents of Malwani.

On Monday, the trio had a meal and a few drinks at a popular bar and restaurant on Goregaon Link Road. They ran up a huge bill of Rs 10700. When the bill was presented, the accused produced an ATM card. The restaurant management swiped the card and one of the accused signed the slip. The trio then walked out of the premises.

"The card was a duplicate. The data on it had been copied from the ATM card of a Santa Cruz resident, Manish Purohit. He received a text alert from his bank after a sum of Rs 10700 was debited from his account towards payment of the hotel bill," said a police official. Purohit was alarmed. He immediately dialled a telephonic yellow pages service and obtained the contact number of the restaurant whose name was mentioned in the text message. A waiter, Sandeep, answered the phone.

Purohit told the waiter that his ATM card was misused at the restaurant and to catch the accused. The waiter alerted the restaurant management. As the restaurant staff rushed outside, two of the accused had left in an auto. They managed to pin down Shaikh and informed the Bangur Nagar police. Shaikh was arrested the same day under IPC provisions.
