Maharashtra irrigation scam: Probe team doesn't name any minister in report

MUMBAI: As expected the Chitale committee, which probed the irrigation scam in Maharashtra, has failed to name any minister or senior officials in its over 1,300 pages report.

The Chitale probe team did not inquire into the core issues of alleged corruption and the manner in which irrigation contracts were awarded arbitrarily to contractors at inflated costs. Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, who was at the centre of the controversy, finds no mention at all in the report. It was during his tenure as water resources minister for the most of last decade that these alleged irregularities took place.

In September 2012, Pawar resigned briefly after TOI exposed his role in granting revised administrative approvals running into thousands of crores in a short time of eight months. The Chitale committee's failure to probe Pawar's role could come as a shot in the arm for him on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections.

After 14 months and an expenditure of over Rs 2 crore, the probe panel has failed to address the core issue of malpractices in the award of irrigation projects worth thousands of crores. The SIT has only recommended a further inquiry by a competent authority. Whether the demand is for a judicial or criminal probe must be spelt out clearly. Till then, the irrigation scam will remain unsolved.
