Daring robbery bid at finance company office in Thane

THANE: Four armed robbers attempted a daring strike at an office of a gold mortgage finance company in Panchpakhadi here on Wednesday afternoon but failed as a large crowd gathered outside after the staff raised an alarm. Two suspects were caught immediately and one later in the day as the police went all out to nab the culprits, even pressing commandos into service for a combing operation of the building housing the office.

The first two arrests were made with the help of the public at the crime spot. A third person was nabbed around 8.30 pm in Diwa, while the fourth suspect remained on the run.

The police said that around 3.45 pm four masked robbers armed with a country-made revolver and a chopper sneaked inside the Muthoot Fincorp office on the first floor of the eight-storey Nagesh Towers at the T-junction of the busy area.

Joint commissioner V V Laxminarayan said three robbers went up to the office while one stayed back on the ground floor to keep a watch. Two robbers flashed the revolver and the chopper as they locked a security guard and two women staff members in a bathroom. One of them then pointed the revolver at a womn at the cash counter and took Rs 35,000 from her.

About the time the robbers were asking for gold, the women in the bathroom started screaming and a person on the ground floor made a call to the Regional Disaster Management Cell and the police, thinking some women were trapped in the building.

A large crowd gathered outside the building. Soon it was surprised to see two robbers running out of the building. The two were intercepted by the onlookers just as the police arrived. The police recovered the Rs 35,000 from one of the two arrested men.

The Muthoot office is less than 500 metres from the Naupada police station.

The Quick Response Team then arrived and for an hour searched the building for the other two robbers, but they had fled.

Laxminarayan refused to reveal the names of the arrested accused, saying it would hamper the police investigations.

He said the police had got hold of CCTV footage.

The process of registering the case was underway at the Naupada police station late at night.
