Work starts to fill craters on Andheri roads

MUMBAI: Ripples of change are visible across Andheri and Vile Parle (W) following TOI's 'Mumbai Patrol' campaign. The authorities of K-West ward have begun to repair specific roads that were named by residents in the news report and during the subsequent public meeting. A local corporator has sponsored streetlights in Amboli.

Actor Rakesh Bedi had complained about potholes causing traffic jams at Costa Coffee Junction off Link Road. Paver blocks are being laid at the site. TOI had highlighted craters below the Vile Parle skywalk near S V Road and similar repairs are being undertaken there as well.

Assistant municipal commissioner Vishwas Shankarwar confirmed that the action was initiated after complaints received during the 'Mumbai Patrol' campaign. He said, "I was present at the public meeting and have taken cognizance of these grievances. We are carrying out a series of initiatives, including action against illegal hawkers."

Advocate Divyesh Trivedi, who had highlighted the cause of Ramesh Nagar, Amboli, called to say that the road leading from Kunchikorve Nagar to Sahakar Nagar would shortly be repaired under a Central government scheme. Local corporator Jyoti Sutar has put up an announcement to that effect.

At the open forum a female resident of Kevnipada, Amboli, had said drug addicts and drunkards prowled the dark stretches of her lane after dusk. Councillor Ameet Satam had instantly promised to install two streetlights, and after surveying the locality, he kept his word on Friday. "It was a private road that was not handed over to the BMC so the civic body could not install lights. I decided to sponsor them," he said.

Bedi appreciated the civic body's effort but wondered how long paver blocks would last. "Also, why does it take a newspaper campaign to rouse the authorities out of their slumber? It is sad that local residents or journalists have to show them where the roads are broken. Do citizens not pay taxes? Or does the BMC not see the obvious state of affairs?" he said.
