MUMBAI: A city based activist, Sandeep Thakur, has complained about high vehicle parking rates charged by a Vashi mall to City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (Cidco).
In his letter to Cidco, Thakur has stated that the mall management of Centre One is charging higher than the standard parking rates, which is in violation of the Leave & License Agreement that the mall has with Cidco for public parking adjacent to its premises.
According to the mall's agreement with Cidco, the parking rates levied there will have to be equal to the charges at the Public Parking Lot in front of Vashi railway station,'' said Thakur.
He further elaborated that while the minimum car parking rates at Centre One is Rs 10 for every two hours and Rs 20 for two to six hours; the corresponding charges at Vashi railway station complex is Rs 10 for every four hours, and Rs 20 for four to eight hours.
Since the mall management is charging a higher parking rate, this is clearly a violation. I feel that this parking discrimination has been done in order to discourage the motorists in general from parking next to the mall, as they prefer their own customers to have this space, although this is a public parking area,'' commented Thakur.
The Cidco manager in-charge of Town Services, S G Paluskar, commented: As per rules, the management of Centre One cannot charge higher than the existing parking rates at the Vashi railway station complex. So if there is a violation then I will have to cancel their parking contract.''
However, when TOI contacted Centre One, the mall management stated that no one has complained to them about the parking rates which are just marginally higher.
Our parking charges are very reasonable at Rs 10 for every two hours. We don't want to compare with any other parking lots, but we keep the area clean and ensure proper maintenance. Our parking staff also get more than the standard minimal wages,'' said the mall manager Amaan Fakih.
Fakih added that till now, the parking bay has been a 'zero complaint zone' with regards to its upkeep.
Meanwhile, the people who parked their vehicles next to Centre One have given mixed response on this issue.
I basically park here for around 60 to 90 minutes and pay Rs 10, which would be the same cost at Vashi station in my case. So it does not matter much to me, as long as my car is safe here,'' said a customer, Kumar S.
However, another Navi Mumbaikar remarked: There should be standard parking rates at all places in the city. Also, the parking charges should be properly displayed for the public. At another Vashi parking lot, opposite Kalyan Jewellers shop, the attendants are illegally asking us to pay more than the printed parking rates.''
