Police said the victim, Poonam Galrani, seemed to have resisted the robber who tried to kill her by first strangulating with a mobile charger wire, and then stabbed her with a knife, and finally hit her with a LPG cylinder.
The murder was committed between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm when the victim was alone in her house in the posh Saket Nagar area was alone in the house an. Poonam's husband Vijay and son Ravi were at their shop, and had sent a staffer to their home when she had failed to respond to repeated phone calls. The staffer, Nandlal Gupta, found Poonam lying in a pool of blood at about 7.30 pm. The Kolsewadi police said both Ravi and Gupta had lunch at the house, and left for the shop with packed lunch for Vijay at 3.30 pm. Poonam's two daughters Jyoti and Geeta are collegians and stay with their aunt at Ulhasnagar.
My wife used to come to our shop daily at 4.30 pm and help us until 9.30 pm. But on Sunday when she did not turn up and did not attend my calls, I sent my watchman who found the door was locked from outside, said Vijay. He then called his relatives in Ulhasnagar to ask if his wife had gone there. After that Vijay sent Gupta with a duplicate key to his home.
Police said the jewellery that Poonam was wearing were not taken by the robber.
"Our initial probe suggests that the victim might have tried to stop the robber who was trying to escape with the cash, leading to the murder," said B S More, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kalyan region of Thane police.
Police are probing if any person who knew the victim was behind the killing. The next-door neighbours were watching TV at the time of the murder and have told the police they did not hear any noise.
