Minor raped in a garden in Mumbai, accused held

MUMBAI: A 29-year-old man was arrested by the Charkop police recently for the rape of a minor who was a distant relative of his. The seven-year-old victim lives with her parents at Charkop in the compound of a housing society where her father works as a watchman. The case was reported to the police eight days late which might affect gathering of evidence, officials said.

The accused, Dhanbir Thapa, hailed from the same hometown as the victim's family. On February 28, he came to stay over at the victim's house which is a tiny room. The next afternoon, the victim's mother was cooking and her father left to fill water in the society's overhead tank. The victim was playing outside her house with her younger brother. Sometime later, when her mother came out to call everyone for lunch, she couldn't find the victim. Her son told her that Thapa had taken the girl out for a soft drink. Thapa took long to return and the girl's mother slapped him when she noticed that her daughter was weeping. Thapa then left in a huff.

"The girl complained of stomach ache, at which her mother took her to a paediatrician. She was given medicines but the pain persisted and her mother took her to the paediatrician again. Then on March 6, the victim confided to her mother that she had been raped in a public garden at sector 3, Charkop. Her mother consulted a woman in the neighbourhood before taking the victim to a civic hospital," said senior inspector Anand Koli, Charkop police. A medical examination confirmed rape.

The victim's mother approached the Charkop police station on March 8 and a complaint was lodged against Thapa. But he had left Mumbai. The police then contacted community groups and got a tip-off that Thapa was in Gujarat. A team of officials left for Morbi and nabbed Thapa from a restaurant, where he had taken up a job, on March 10. He was brought back to Mumbai where he was booked under provisions of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He has been remanded to police custody till Saturday by a Dindoshi sessions court.

Thapa earlier worked in Dombivali and Pune. He would keep changing his location and employment.
