Maharashtra Pollution Control Board sets up panel to survey Ulhas river

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has set up a five-member committee to survey polluting industries discharging untreated effluents in the Ulhas and Waldhuni rivers. The committee has been set up on the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and a report is to be submitted within two months. The NGO Vanshakti had filed an appeal before the NGT to restore the Ulhas river.

The members include Professor Virendra Sethi from IIT, Powai, Dr Rakesh Kumar, NEERI, B P Salunkhe, Regional Officer, MPCB, Kalyan, Ashwin Aghor, director, Vanshakti and MPCB officer Nilesh Patil is convenor.

The terms of the committee include inspecting MIDC and industries in the Ulhas river basin.

Identifying polluting industries in the area which are discharging effluent in the Waldhuni and Ulhas rivers. The committee has to complete the survey within two months and submit a report to the MPCB. It will also suggest further line of action including short term and long term measures for mitigating the environmental pollution of Ulhas river basin.
