BMC to allow corporators to construct arches bearing their names

MUMBAI: While the common Mumbaikars are still struggling to get basic amenities like regular water supply and pothole-free roads, corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are hell bent on installing arches (kamani) exhibiting their names at the cost of taxpayers' money. These arches will be built at places like Mulund, Mankhurd, Govandi, Chembur, Deonar, Andheri in the city.

The civic standing committee has made amendments of Rs 550 crore in the annual budget for 2014-15. While doing this, it has also allotted lakhs of rupees for installing arches in wards of prominent civic leaders like standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale, house leader Yashodhar Phanse, education committee chairman Manoj Kotak. In addition to this, Rs 1.10 crore have also been provided for installing arches in Koliwadas and Gaothans.

According to the civic officials, these arches will be built at spots like LBS checknaka, Mulund, Mahul, Agarwadi, Mankhurd-VN Purav Marg, Vadavali village, Deonar village, Govandi village, Govandi-Borli, Ghatla village, Chembur Gaothan, Charai village, Aanik village, Gavanpada, Vashigaon, Mahul Koliwada, Andheri west, Andhericha Raja chowk, Versova police station and Versova village.

Shewale, who is contesting Lok Sabha elections from South-Central Mumbai constituency, has already set up several arches in his ward. He has now asked for construction of more arches at places like Deonar, Mankhurd etc. The former opposition leader Dnyanraj Nikam has also built such arches at Sandhurst Road.

However, Congress corporator Mohsin Haider has opposed this move by calling it a 'sheer waste of public money.' "Its okay if there are arches at the entry gates of the city. But where is the need to install arches at other places in the city? This will serve no purpose and the money can be used for other development works," he said.

Mr Haider has demanded to scrap the provision made by the BMC for installment of arches across the city. "I was denied permission to raise this issue in the civic house on Monday, but will again bring up the matter in the next house meeting on March 6," he added.
