Family and friends of Standard Chartered Bank's Amit Kasat, an auto analyst, said he had been running 10 km every day for last seven months. "After participating in Powai and Vasai runs, this was his third attempt. He underwent a thorough health check last November and was declared absolutely fit," his wife told TOI.
Family of photographer Viraj Kovale, too, said he never had any heart ailment. "The doctors are saying his condition is very serious and have prescribed medicines worth Rs 20,000," said his wife Shravani. Cardiologist Dr B K Goyal said Kovale had to be given four shocks to revive his heart. "Conditions of both are serious. We can't conduct detailed investigations till they regain consciousness," he said. Another runner, Atul Singh (40), was taken to the hospital after he felt disoriented. Goyal said, "He suffered from ventricular fibrillation. It's the step in cardiac arrest where the heart stops functioning. He is in the ICU."
Of the 39,510 participants, more than 3,000 complained of severe dehydration, exertion, muscle cramps and vomiting. They were treated by a team of doctors from Asian Heart Institute. Around 10 people needed hospitalization. AHI MD Dr Ramakant Panda said, "Sudden cardiac arrests are a result of heightened stress. Runners usually pump up their pace in the last few kilometres." He said 102 heart patients from the hospital ran an injury-free marathon. Medical director of AHI Dr Vijay D'Silva, who headed the medical camp, said a lot more people required intravenous hydration than that previous years. The temperature in the morning was around 16.1 degrees C in Colaba, but later rose to 30 degrees, which might have caused discomfort to many.
