The Shivaji Nagar police said that the incident took place at around 1.30pm on Saturday. "We were looking for a drug peddler, Mustafa Shaikh (20), in connection with two cases of assault registered with us. He was wanted in these two cases of last year. We received information that he was at home. Two police constables Mohan Shinde and Dinkar Baburao went to his home to nab him. Shinde who identified Shaikh, tried to catch him and meanwhile Shaikh's elder brother Farooque attacked Shinde with a chopper," said a police officer, adding that soon after this Shaikh also attacked Shinde with a sharp obeject. "Shinde sustained two stab injuries and the two brothers fled from there," the police said.
Soon after the news of attack on cop reached the police stations, huge number of policemen reached the spot and did panchnama. The two accused have not been arrested yet. "The Shaikhs are into drug peddling and have rivalry with the local gundas. Last year Shaikh fought with some local goons and cases were registered against him. He was on the run since last year," said a local from Govandi. It is also alleged that some police personnel were hand in glove with the drug peddler in these areas and would collect hafta fromt them.
There are four cases against Farooque of rioting, attempt to murder and assault. "Shinde, who sustained two stab injuries on his back, has been discharged from the hospital and the FIR is being filed against the Shaikh brothers. We have activated all our sources to nab the suspects," said a police officer.
