Deadline confusion costs hotel industry Rs 100cr

MUMBAI: The initial refusal of Mumbai Police to extend bar and restaurant timings from 1.30am to 5am for New Year's Eve may have cost the hospitality industry around Rs 100 crore in the Mumbai region. Hoteliers said the confusion resulted in fewer footfalls as several people had already made plans for a party at home or outside the city.

Bar owners said their estimates indicated that liquor sales on December 31, 2013, were around 9-10 lakh litres against 11-12 lakh litres on December 31, 2012. Excise officials said they were yet to calculate the exact figures but admitted preliminary reports indicated there was a drop in turnout at hotels and restaurants.

"By the time the High Court order arrived, the 'unreasonable' refusal by the Mumbai police chief to extend the deadline for New Year's Eve celebrations in hotels prompted many Mumbaikars to alter their plans. This is evident from our preliminary estimates," said Pradeep Shetty, honorary secretary of Hotels and Restaurants Association of Western India (HRAWI).

Shetty added that few tourists arrived in Mumbai during the last week of 2013 to participate in Christmas and New Year celebrations . "Many tourist operators said their clients were worried about safety and security issues following the police's refusal to extend the deadline for the revelry citing women's safety and terror threats as reasons. People cancelled or diverting their travel plans," he said. Ahar general secretary Sukesh Shetty said many patrons had moved to neighbouring states, nearby farmhouses or tourist destinations to celebrate New Year's Eve. "Police are supposed to build confidence among locals and tourists but the reasons cited for refusal to extend the deadline created a sense of fear," he added.
