After it was found that municipal drivers were taking home huge overtime payments, sometimes adding up to be more than the salaries of their bosses, the civic transport department in September came up with a circular, instructing the personal assistants or personal secretaries of officials who use municipal vehicles to fill the log sheets of the drivers concerned. In the log sheets, the PAs were supposed to write down their bosses' "in" and "out" timings, so that drivers could not put in inflated hours. But the practice has not yet taken off, and in fact, the staff have been complaining about the additional duty thirst on them. Officials said the circular was issued as it was found that the log sheets were prepared either by the drivers themselves or the technical time-keeper at the garages. "After the circular was issued, several leaders wrote to us, asking for the circular to be scrapped. The leaders claimed that the PAs or PSs were not with them when they released their vehicles and so, they shouldn't be made responsible of filling the sheets," said a civic official.
TOI, through a series of reports, have highlighted how the municipal drivers make a killing by earning a hefty sum through overtimes. The BMC spends approximately Rs 7 crore in salaries for drivers. The highest earner among them is the civic chief's driver, who drew Rs 11.94 lakh in 2012-2013, a major chunk of which consisted overtime.
