Deora's earlier remarks on the ordinance and the Adarsh case had preceded Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's decisive interventions on these issues.
In a letter sent to the PM on Friday, Deora said the money sanctioned under the MPLADS right now can be used for infrastructure-related projects in one's constituency while the demand for jobs and skills are the "top priority for people". On Saturday, Deora tweeted that the sum of Rs 5 crore given to MPs annually could be put to better use. In his letter, Deora has requested Singh to consider a proposal in the Cabinet to streamline the MPLADS or "replace MPLADS with a new scheme". "Each parliamentarian can then direct his/her constituents seeking skill development and jobs to the initiative and help mobilize youngsters from their constituency. These funds can be directly provided to students upon completion of training and certification in each constituency, thereby removing the potential of misuse," he stated.
"With this we can move away from funds provided to MPs for hard infrastructure projects to the more important soft infrastructure of skill building and employability that can have a longer impact on the country," he said. Deora said this will help the country reap the demographic dividend.
