MUMBAI: In response to the Maharashtra cabinet's decision to allow homeopaths to prescribe allopathic medicines after doing a one-year bridge course in pharmacology, the Indian Medical Association's (IMA) Maharashtra chapter will hold a brainstorming session on Sunday.

It had, on Thursday, announced a few hours after the state Cabinet decision that it planned to pursue the matter in the courts.

"Our executive committee meeting will meet at 11 am to discuss the road ahead," said Dr Jayesh Lele, who is the secretary of IMA's Maharashtra chapter. Members of the state IMA's 195 branches will also meet on January 19 to discuss the issue, he added.

IMA Maharashtra members have already consulted their lawyer on the issue. "We have gathered over 30 judgments delivered in various Indian courts, including the Supreme Court, that ruled against practitioners of alternative therapy prescribing allopathic medicines," said Dr Lele.

Meanwhile, not all homeopaths are happy with the Cabinet decision. They believe homeopaths will lose their distinctive edge if they start following allopathy. "It is definitely the darkest period in a real homeopath's life. Soon my science will become extinct, thanks to the unfortunate decision," said homeopath Dr Shreepad Khedekar.
