2 lakh mourners attend Syedna funeral

MUMBAI: During Moharram last year, Tasneem Photawala caught a glimpse of the 52nd spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, when he crossed a makeshift ramp between Saifee Masjid and the Raudat Tahera mausoleum in Bhendi Bazar. The next time she saw him was on Saturday at 1.30pm, when a coffin carrying his body made the same journey after he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on Friday.

About two lakh people came for the funeral.

By 2pm, the Syedna was buried in the marble Raudat Tahera tomb—it has the entire Quran inscribed in gold on its walls—alongside his father, Syedna Taher Saifuddin.

Photawala, who owns a shop selling images of the Syedna opposite the Raudat Tahera, said she was unable to find words to express her grief at his passing.

The crowd, members of which were beating their chests and shouting "Imam Hussain" at regular intervals, set up a deafening wail when the casket, wrapped in green velvet and strewn with flowers, came into view.

Most of the Bohri men packed into Raudat Tahera Street—only men were allowed close to the mosque and the dargah—had been waiting from around 9am; the funeral procession did not arrive in Bhendi Bazaar till 12.40pm.

The afternoon namaaz began a little before 1pm and was followed by the janaza ni namaaz, or funeral prayer. Dressed in crisp white sayo kurtos, or the traditional Bohri dress, the repetitive movements in the crowd during the namaaz resembled waves in a sea of white.

The funeral was carefully orchestrated to avoid a repetition of the stampede that took place outside the Syedna's residence in Malabar Hill in the wee hours, a tragedy that left 18 people dead.

A ramp prevented people from closing in on the funeral procession. Manned barricades were set up to facilitate crowd control and television screens allowed people to watch the proceedings from afar.

Husain Pachorawala, a member of the Bohri security force, was on duty from 4.30pm on Friday. He said he had spent the night setting up the ramp, putting up the barricades and helping carry away the soil from the burial site.

"The Syedna's death came as a rude shock because his 103rd birthday was just around the corner and we were happily making preparations for it," he said.

Mohammed Batliwala and his two friends from school were among those caught in the stampede at Malabar Hill, but that did not deter them from attending the funeral of their spiritual leader. They felt it was the least they could do for a person who took the time to interact with his followers even in his nineties.

Two teenage girls from Surat, Sarrah and Maryam, also witnessed the stampede and saw their friends get trampled on. They said they were convinced that repeating the Syedna's name helped save all their lives.
