MUMBAI: The 26th Western India Science Fair at Nehru Science Centre (NSC) in Worli was inaugurated on Wednesday. Around 35 science projects and 15 teaching aids made by students from across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan Chhattisgarh, Daman and Diu, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Goa and Gujarat, are on display at the fair.
Arup Basu, the president New Business and Innovation Centre, Tata Chemicals inaugurated the event. The inauguration witnessed a massive turnout from the students and teachers community hailing from Mumbai as well as other states that are participating in this fair.
Basu, said, "The fair is a wonderful platform to develop a scientific temperament in an atmosphere of exuberance and irreverence. Indian pedagogy is excessively focused on structured teaching and we need more avenues to complement this with semi-structured learning opportunities. I hope such efforts proliferate to enable infusion of considerably more "vigyan" into the "gyan" that our young citizens are subjected to in their early years."
Shivaprasad Khened, Director, NSC, said, "Science fairs are useful because they help in developing an inquiring mind, stimulate a sense of curiosity, help in problem-solving and encourage researching attitudes among young minds."
Winner participants from each of the participating states are selected to be at Mumbai. The fairs assist to popularize science and technology in cities, urban and rural areas for the benefit of students by organizing exhibitions, seminars, popular lectures, science camps and various other programs. The fair will be open for students and general public from December 18-21, 2013.
