Traffic cop injured in hit-and-run case

MUMBAI: A speeding SUV knocked down a traffic police constable and sped away after jumping signal on Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) on Decenber 10. The incident occurred around 10.30am when constable Jagnath Mahid (47) signalled the SUV driver to stop for jumping signal, said the Deonar police.

Mahid posted at Shivaji Nagar signal on GMLR was hit when he signaled to stop the driver of the Bolero. "He stood infront of the jeep to stop the driver. The driver slowed down his vehicle. Mahid called his subordinate, a police naik, to stand infront of the vehicle as he went to check the license of the accused. The driver, however, sped up his vehicle and ran over his toe while trying to flee," said the police.

Mahid raised an alarm following which the driver stopped. "Mahid, while injured, took a photocopy copy of driver's license. As he started to feel pain, Mahid went aside. His subordinates too gathered at the spot to help. The driver sensed opportunity and sped away from the spot. Based on the information the police got details of the accused Dadamiya Peerzade, a resident of Sangli. A case has been registered against him and tracking him down," said the police.

Mahid was rushed to a nearby hospital and has sustained fracture injuries.
