Mehboob Studio will be lit up with stars next weekend

Mumbai's magical Mehboob Studio is the venue of the third edition of The Times of India Literary Carnival, December 6-8. Yet again, a range of sparkling discussions and book launches will explore this year's focus on Romance, love and violence —individually and in their bizarre liaisons.

The theme, chosen months ago, has turned out to be prescient, given the current barrage of real-life stories that defy the limits of fiction. Keynote speakers will deconstruct each of these subjects—Hanif Kureishi with his trademark cynicism, Karan Johar through his rose-tinted shades and Eve Ensler with her bare-knuckled honesty.

In a first, the Crossword Book Awards has chosen to partner with the festival. Coke Studio will add its fizz, and Ensler's latest play 'Emotional Creature', produced by Mahabanoo Kotwal, will be premiered.

The festival's now-signature diversity will embrace the launch of the controversial book on 26/11, featuring its authors Adrian Levy and Cathy Scott-Clark in conversation with Barkha Dutt; the Mumbai launch of Valmik Thapar's 'Tiger Fire'; Dibakar Banerjee and Mohammed Hanif discussing how love and violence play out in their separate genres.

Senior cop Rakesh Maria will chat with Ravi Subramanian on devils in pin-stripes, and the headline-grabber of sexual predators in high places will receive the seriousness it deserves.

At the litfest, Anita Raghavan, author of 'The Billionaire's Apprentice', talks to Swaminathan Aiyar on how the lure of the extra zero seduces even the loftiest; Amish Tripathi and Sudhir Kakar take an unblinking look at sexism in Hindu mythology.

How can we omit democracy tandava rampaging across our consciousness? Tavleen Singh, Pavan Varma and Vinod Mehta at their combative best with Siddharth Varadarajan. If it all happens on Twitter, Shobhaa De and Santosh Desai explore the phenomenon. The romance of sport and its violation find expression in Mary Kom's punch and the sixers and fixers of cricket. With so much on offer, Mumbai will again be fully booked next weekend. The gently perceptive Ruskin Bond will receive a lifetime achievement award.
