MUMBAI: The Bhandup police on Monday arrested a 22 -year-old who had allegedly attacked and robbed his great grandmother with help of his two accomplices. Revathi Medhekar (75) was murdered on October 16 around 8pm at her house in Medhekar chawl at Tanaji wadi in Bhandup (West).
The main accused Kalpesh Kadam, 22, and two of his accomplices Vinod Chavan, 20, and Nandu Chavan, 20, entered the woman's house when she was alone and attacked her for valuables. They barged into the house when she was alone following which she was attacked with a knife. She had sustained injuries on her head, face and hand and fled away with her chains worth Rs 70,000.
Bhandup police senior inspector Shrirang Nadgauda said that the victim's grandson has planned to kill and rob the entire gold valuables and money from the cupboard. "But he got worried when she started screaming forcing him to flee with only the chain that the victim was wearing," said Nadgauda.
Investigators said Kadam and his two aides barged into the house when the victim was alone following which she was attacked with a knife. She had sustained injuries on her head, face and hand.
The victim, with help of neighbours, was hospitalized.. "We learned that Kadam's father runs a Vada-pav stall in Poladpur in Mahad district. We also learned that one of the employees of his stall had quit and started his own stall nearby. We took the employee in to confidence and had asked him to notify us when Kadam would visit the stall," said the police.
The police were tipped off about Kadam's visit and on Sunday laid a trap and arrested him in Poladpur. He confessed of committing the offence along with his two aides.
