Indian Coast Guard carried out fifth edition of National-Level Pollution Response Exercise

MUMBAI: The fifth edition of National Level Pollution Response Exercise (NATPOLREX-V) was conducted by the Indian Coast Guard on December 10, off Mumbai.

Seventy Five percent of India's energy requirements are met by oil that is imported into our country by ships. Oil transportation by ships is fraught with inherent risks and requires preventive measures to be taken both by the ship owners as well as the oil receiving facilities inside the port. However, the threat of oil pollution through maritime accidents is omnipresent in the unforgiving seas that around us.

The ICG officials said it is the Central Coordinating Authority amongst the resource agencies engaged in oil handling, responsible to put into place a robust pollution response system, and check their preparedness levels at regular intervals. Towards this end, Representatives of various Ministries and Departments of Central Government and Coastal State Governments, Ports, Oil Handling Agencies and other stake holders participated in the exercise.

Seven Coast Guard ships, two CG helicopters, two Dornier aircraft, one Indian Naval Ship, one Indian Air Force C-130J Super Hercules, two vessels of ONGC, one tug of JNPT, one tug of MbPT and one tanker of Shipping Corporation of India participated in the exercise. In addition, representative of Mumbai, State Disaster Management Authority, National Institute of Oceanography, Oil Industry Safety Directorate, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and other oil companies witnessed the exercise.
