MUMBAI: Customs officials at Mumbai airport have made a neat Rs 78-lakh gold haul over a period of 24 hours. Six different cases of gold smuggling—starting from Friday night and continuing on Saturday—involved Indian passengers who had flown in from Thailand and the Middle East.

The first interception was around 11.30pm on Friday when the check-in bag of a Thai Airways passenger flying in from Bangkok was searched and a particularly heavy purse was found. "The purse, the kind used by women, looked normal except that its chain was unusually heavy, suggesting the use of a different metal," said an official from the air intelligence unit. The buckle of the belt worn by the passenger was also made of gold and was coated with a silver-coloured metal to hoodwink the Customs. The chain was inspected, scratched and the aluminium-coloured chain gave way to reveal gold weighing 820 gm.

The next case in which gold was hidden inside a passernger's body was detected around 1am on Saturday. The IndiGo passenger, identified as Mohammed Ahmed who had arrived on its flight from Dubai, could not clear the doorframe screening machine as it blared a warning to indicate metal on his body. "He himself confessed that he had 580 gm of gold concealed in his rectum," said the Customs official. The gold cost about Rs 15 lakh and he had spent only six days in Dubai, which meant he would have had to pay a higher duty on the half kg of gold he brought in.

In the next three cases, gold bars were hidden in the usual places. Like for instance, a Gulf Air passenger who had hidden about 450 gm of gold inside a stereo, the kind installed in cars. Then there was a flyer with gold bars hidden inside the battery cavity of an emergency light and another who had gold hidden in LED lights.

The last catch of the day turned out to be the most sensational with a flyer from Dubai trying to smuggle in 628 gm of gold broken into 46 pieces worth nearly Rs 16 lakh. It was hidden in capacitors of speakers, laptop chargers, transistors, LED lights and radio.
