CM addresses SNDT's convocation, talks about women's issues

MUMBAI: SNDT Women's University celebrated its 63rd annual convocation at the Sir Sitaram and Lady Shantabai Patkar Deekshant Sabhagriha at Churchgate on December 23. At the 63rd convocation, the university awarded degrees and diplomas to, 17,077 students for its programmes on the completion of their Ph D, MPhil, masters and PG diplomas apart from bachelors and undergraduate degrees, diplomas and certificates. In all 57 PhD and 12 M.Phil. degrees were conferred during this convocation.

Dr Rohini Madhusudan Godbole was conferred the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) for her outstanding contribution in the field of public health, clinical research and social change. In her acceptance speech Dr Godbole remarked that this honorary degree conferred on me is recognition of the wind of change which has seen SNDT University expand its reach in the fields of Chemical Technology and Computer Science. The convocation address was delivered by chief guest, CM Prithviraj Chavan. He spoke at length about issues concerning State and women. He congratulated all the prize winners and their parents for withstanding challenges and remembered Shri Karve for his contribution to women's education. Elaborating on challenges of natural resources in Maharashtra he suggested the need to utilise human and knowledge resources. He committed to support SNDTWU in its forthcoming centenary celebrations.

The highlight of the 63rd convocation was the live webcasting of the convocation ceremony to six locations simultaneously: two campuses of located at Juhu and Pune and its four SNDTWU Colleges located at Amalner, Dhule, Nashik and Satara. This year two new programmes - PG diploma in Management of NGO's working with Excluded Communities and Master of Arts in Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy Studies were awarded for the first time.

Vice-Chancellor Vasudha Kamat on the occasion of 63rd convocation remarked that, 'the university is going through transformation, the entire purpose of bringing about change was to experience new pedagogy of constructivism, use information and communication technology in teaching-learning process as well as in administration, modernize examination processes, so that students of this university can acquire skills of the 21st Century and get empowered to become successful global citizens'.
