Bio-toilets are touted as eco-friendly and cost effective solution as it decomposes the solid waste into water and bio-gas and it only requires one-time installation.
Dr Huzaifa Khorakiwala, trustee & CEO, Wockhardt Foundation, said, "Bio-Toilet will play a critical role in preventable healthcare. Along with providing good waste management solution, its cost effectiveness compared to other available waste disposal systems is another benefit. Moving forward, we plan to install bio-toilets in several places of Mumbai including households, construction sites, airports, village central points, educational institutions, pilgrimage sites, and slums."
Wockhardt Foundation aims to offer a complete solid waste management solution for 6-7 users in a family, which very effectively addresses each of environmental issues at a nominal cost. In Mumbai, more than 4 million people opt for open defecation due to unavailability of toilets, and hence
Ajay Gupta, district governor, Rotary club, said, "This new initiative will be extremely effective in places facing a space crunch, and where there is inadequate provision for drainage. Sanitation in Mumbai can be improved with similar steps."
