On Thursday, the police cleared an open plot near the customs' quarters in Powai of weeds after the accused, Gaurav Baruah (34), told the police
that he had thrown Vibhuti Sampat's cellphone there.
Vibhuti's parents claimed that her purse containing credit and debit cards too was missing. The murder took place on Saturday.
"Vibhuti's cellphone is an important piece of evidence as the accused had sent two messages asking her whether she reached home safely. The call records of the phone is crucial to establish that the accused was with her at the time of the murder," said Milan Kettle, senior police inspector. The police also recorded statements of four people who allegedly saw the couple moving together at Juhu beach and returning to Gaurav's flat.
After confirming that she was dead, he sent an SMS from her phone to her relative stating that she had been kidnapped, the police said. Gaurav was not aware that the relative had discontinued the mobile service a few months ago. After committing the murder, Gaurav allegedly sent two messages to her, the police added. "The intention of the accused was to mislead police," said joint commissioner Himanshu Roy.
Gaurav, an interior designer, had earlier confessed before the cops that he strangled Vibhuti following an argument. He dumped her body into a cardboard box and drove towards Powai in his car. He set the box on fire at an abandoned spot and fled.
