MUMBAI: Three collegians have been arrested by the Dahisar police in a series of chain-snatching and bag theft cases. The father of one of the boys had taken a loan to gift him a bike which was used to commit crimes.
The accused have been identified as Yash Prajapati, Naushad Khan and Joyston Noronha, aged between 19 and 22 years.
The boys are residents of Papdi in Vasai and have briefly worked in call centres. With their arrest, the police have solved six cases. To avoid getting caught, the boys used fancy number plates on their bikes where the digits couldn't be easily identified. At times, they would spray the number plates with dirt to cover up the digits. They have at least one more aide who is on the run.
The group used bikes that had good pick-up and would hang out near auto stands, bus stands or toll nakas. They would keep a lookout for senior citizens or women with kids as they were easy targets.
"The boys preferred snatching bags to stealing mobiles or chains due to the easy availability of cash and cards in handbags," said senior inspector Ansar Pirzade, Dahisar police.
"Bag thefts were committed by the gang at the mouth of flyovers on the Western Express Highway, so they could flee via the stretch under the flyover."
Prajapati's father works as a clerk with the state transport department and had taken a loan to gift his son a bike. Gold weighing 40 gm and one bike have been recovered by the police.
The boys frequented pubs, discos and hookah parlours where they would splurge the loot.
