Qureshi (42) and his two brothers live with their families in the Ghas Bazar slum that borders Bandra (E) station. His wife Tabassum and children said they were happy to have him back. They said they had faced no financial hardship in his absence given thefamily'ssupport.
On Friday, Ayub was invited to a celebratory 'daawat' (feast) by friends at Chinchoti on Mumbai's outskirts. Speaking to TOI over phone, he said, "I was intermittently jailed in Arthur Road and Aurangabad. Iserved my lasts tintin Nashik after surrendering in April this year. My family did face stigma for a brief period but our neighboursunderstood."
However, families affected by the 1993 blasts see these developments in a different light. TOI spoke to three such families. Two lost their near ones while a third is bedridden since 20 years. They declined to be identified but said their lives had been shattered. "I want to convey to the judiciary that it has failed the victims of the 1993 blasts. Monetary loss can be recovered but how does one reconcile the death of a breadwinner or the permanent disability of your loved family member? The convicts are in and out of jail, being given liberal parole for weddings and their children's illness. Victims seem to matter less than convicts," said one of them.
