Shakti Mills survivor completes deposition

MUMBAI: The survivor in the Shakti Mills gangrape case completed her deposition in a sessions court on Friday. The 22-year-old photojournalist had requested the court to complete the proceedings on the second day of her testimony and said she did not want to return to court. Principal judge Shalini Phansalkar Joshi obliged and the survivor's cross-examination ended at 5pm. The matter will now be heard on Monday when some technical witnesses are likely to depose.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said the survivor was composed and spoke in a low voice. The court had to make arrangements for a speaker. The survivor stuck to the prosecution's case. Nikam alleged that she was upset at some of the questions posed by the defence, following which the judge intervened.

On Thursday, proceedings had to be halted after the survivor experienced nausea and giddiness, and collapsed. Her health had considerably improved on Friday. Her mother, who had deposed as a witness on Tuesday, was present in court. The survivor was in burqa with three women constables similarly dressed.

Meanwhile, the court has framed charges against four of the accused in the July 31 Shakti Mills case involving a call centre employee. Vijay Jadhav, Salim Ansari, Kasim Shaikh and Ashfaque Shaikh pleaded not guilty. The fifth accused is a juvenile . Jadhav, Ansari and Shaikh are also accused in the photojournalist's case. Nikam said that common evidence in both cases will be produced simultaneously .

On August 22, the photojournalist along with a colleague, had visited the mill on an assignment . She was brutalized. On July 31, the call centre employee was brutalized while she and her future husband were walking through the mill, expecting to take a shorter route to Mahalaxmi station.
