Mumbai to host 2-day ‘celestial marriage’

MUMBAI: South Indian women wearing Kanjeevaram silk saris and fragrant garlands will head to Shanmukhananda Hall in Kings Circle for the wedding of the year this weekend.

The Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha is performing the "celestial marriage" of Aandal, an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, with Sri Rangamannaar or Lord Vishnu. The two-day event will begin at 5pm on Saturday. This is the first time the holy marriage is being hosted in Mumbai. Sri Sri Sadakopa Ramanuja Jeeyar, the head of the Srivilluputtur temple in Tamil Nadu, will perform the rituals. Shanmukhananda spokesman K A Viswanathan said, "The priest will start with the rendition of the Vishnu Sahasranamam and engagement ceremony on the first day followed by the exchange of garlands, kanyadaan Raksha Bandhan, mangalsutra vidhi and saptapadi on the second day. The ceremonies will be accompanied by the beating of drums and nadaswaram."
