Speaking to reporters at the Press Club, activist Prakash Munshi said, "We have conveyed this to the state government officials during our meeting with the chief secretary. The officials have assured us that the suggestions and objection of the citizens will be taken seriously."
Activists and residents' groups were also upset with the fact that the state government had ignored the BMC's cell tower policy which had been prepared after receiving inputs from citizen groups and other stakeholders.
The state government has bypassed an important clause in the BMC policy that states that consent of 70 per cent of the members of a housing society is mandatory for installing cell towers.
The BMC policy prohibiting towers atop buildings that house schools, colleges, hospitals or orphanages as well as the criteria that specific distances need to be maintained between such buildings and towers have also been ignored in the state draft policy. The draft policy will be open to suggestions from the public.
